Construit entre 1874 et 1877, il représente le type de fort dit "à cavalier", avec des positions à ciel ouvert pour l'artillerie d'action lointaine, l'artillerie de défense rapprochée et l'infanterie trouvant place sur le rempart bas couronnant le fossé.
En temps de guerre il était prévu pour une garnison d'environ 180 hommes pour un armement d'une vingtaine de canons. Une fois construit, le fort sera toujours tenu à l'écart de la modernisation.
